Typical school classroom: desks lined up, kids hunched over worksheets, and the teacher going over a lesson on fractions or how to write an essay. It is easy to see what is being taught. What you can’t see is what’s going on in each student’s mind: whether they think they belong, whether they think they’ll understand, and whether getting the wrong answer will make them feel like they need to solve a problem or like they’ve proven something permanent.
It turns out that conversation that you can’t see matters a lot. If a student thinks that their skills are fixed and they’re either good at math or not, they tend to avoid challenges that could show them what they don’t know yet. Students who think they can get better by working hard usually don’t do what they’re supposed to. They look for problems that are harder, ask more questions, and get back on their feet faster after failing. The difference in outcomes between these two groups can’t be explained by how smart they are. What they think about themselves before they even start to write is a big part of the reason.
This difference has been found in many large studies and in several different countries, but it hasn’t really made its way into how most schools work on a daily basis. It’s still common in education to treat academic ability as a fixed quantity when giving grades, giving feedback, or talking to parents about their kids. Either you’re good at this or you’re not. Even though the intention is good, it might be bad for students who are still figuring out who they are as learners.
Of course, mindset doesn’t work by itself. It goes with practical skills like being able to organize information, manage your anger when a task isn’t going well, and solve problems without giving up. As much as a student may believe they can get better, they may not have the habits or strategies to make that happen. This is important for both parts, and schools that only work on one tend to have limited success. Giving someone confidence before teaching them how to drive is like teaching them to believe in hard work without giving them the tools to direct that hard work.
When you watch students compete in school, you get the sense that anxiety has become almost structural. These aren’t character flaws: not wanting to look bad in front of other people, not wanting to ask for help, and giving up on a subject after one bad test. These things happen when students have learned, often without being told directly, that performance shows fixed abilities instead of current growth. It takes more than one motivational poster on the wall for teachers, parents, and the school culture as a whole to change that belief.
The part about practical skills is also not given enough credit. Some students aren’t naturally good at self-regulation, which means being able to keep their attention, slow down when they’re angry, and get back to a task after being distracted. It’s something that can be taught. Students who develop it usually do better in all of their classes. This isn’t because they’re naturally more organized, but because they’ve formed habits that make up for the fact that learning is messy. There is no clean way to learn anything. There are times when nothing makes sense, days when you get lost, and wrong turns. People who are good at self-regulation can deal with that discomfort. Students who haven’t developed it yet often give up and think they can’t do the subject.
It’s possible that schools will keep putting content (what students know) ahead of the conditions that allow them to learn (how they think and act when they’re under a lot of stress). That’s for good reason: the curriculum has to be followed, tests have to be given on time, and a teacher can only do so much with thirty students. But there is more and more evidence, along with a pretty strong case, that investing in mindset and practical skills early on leads to better academic outcomes later on. Not because attitude is everything, but because even the best-thought-out curriculum can’t get past a wall if it doesn’t connect difficulty to something useful.
It’s not always the case that the students who seem to handle school the best are also the ones who had the easiest time. They usually learned along the way that struggling doesn’t mean they’ve lost the game.
