You can see it when a student puts down their pencil, sits back, and mentally checks out halfway through an exam in practically every middle school classroom. Not because the issue is unsolvable. since they’ve already determined that it is. Making that choice between reading the question and picking up a pen is the quietest and most significant work that mindset can do.
For students, the difference between performing and not performing often has less to do with knowledge and more to do with what they think can be changed. A student who believes that their mathematical aptitude is fixed at a certain level from birth will approach a challenging equation in a different way than one who thinks that today’s confusion is merely the beginning of tomorrow’s understanding. The Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, who spent years researching this particular gap, discovered that students’ progress is typically determined by their belief in growth rather than their aptitude.
In practice, the “yet” reframe is arguably the most frequently cited and least utilized example. Changing “I can’t do this” to “I can’t do this yet” sounds almost too straightforward to be significant. However, there is something genuine about the way it reframes struggle—not as a conclusion, but rather as a point in a longer process. The more intriguing result may be that students begin using the word on their own when teachers regularly incorporate it into class discussions.
The skill component of this equation receives less attention. Students need both practical skills and a mindset because they can only go so far without them. Although it is rarely tested, metacognition—the capacity to reflect on one’s own thought processes—is one of the more beneficial abilities a student can acquire.
It appears to be a student taking a moment to reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and why after completing a study session. As an honest self-examination, not as a ritual. Over time, students’ preparation tends to improve when they engage in such reflection, even if it is done briefly.
Another skill that is taught in limited ways is problem-solving. It frequently entails following a series of steps to a predetermined solution in educational settings. However, the more comprehensive version that benefits students over time is the ability to dissect something big and intimidating into manageable chunks. A student does not have a knowledge problem if they are staring at a month-long project the nite before it is due.

They are having trouble with their planning. Telling students to improve their time management is not as honest as teaching them to reverse-engineer goals, which involves working backward from a deadline and outlining what needs to happen on which day.
Teachers often get anxious about emotional regulation because it sounds like therapy, but it’s not. It’s the ability to recognize frustration before it causes one to stop thinking. A student has learned something lasting if they take thirty seconds after giving an incorrect response, feel the heat rising, and then approach the problem again with new eyes. This ability is evident in study sessions, group projects, challenging teacher conversations, and pretty much anywhere a student works under mild pressure, which is to say the majority of the school day.
Particularly in this day and age, collaboration is also worth mentioning. Students benefit more from group projects and contribute more when they are able to actively listen to their peers’ ideas rather than just waiting for their turn to speak. Sitting in a group is not the same as working in one. The former is typical. Like most skills, the latter calls for a particular kind of attentiveness that gets better with practice and constructive criticism.
It’s difficult to ignore the fact that naturally gifted students aren’t always the ones who seem to handle school the best. They are frequently the ones who have somehow learned to remain inquisitive when things become challenging, to view an incorrect response as information rather than condemnation, and to believe—without being naive about it—that effort is not wasted on them. Schools can help students develop that mindset and skill. It simply necessitates being more deliberate about it than is currently permitted by most curricula.
