There are motivational posters, classroom mantras, and bulletin boards with happy fonts that say working hard will make your brain grow. The thought has turned into educational background. So, we should ask: what does the research really say, and does the evidence match up with how the idea has been sold and packaged?

Carol Dweck, a psychologist at Stanford who studied how people deal with failure for many years, came up with the framework. It would be wrong to completely dismiss the idea because the correlations are strong enough.
But this is where things get more interesting. The effect sizes, or actual amounts of improvement, are not nearly as big as what is talked about in popular books and teacher training sessions. When researchers look at a larger group of interventions, they find big differences between settings, schools, and student groups. There were big changes in some schools in the same national study. Some people showed none at all. If an intervention works really well in a public school in Texas, it might not do much in a different setting. There is a bigger criticism that is worth thinking about. Since that’s where most of the money for growth mindset research comes from, it makes sense that most of it only looks at academic performance and test scores. This doesn’t mean that research on the growth mindset is bad science. Some critics say that the foundations aren’t as strong as they seem. But there is a real gap between what the research shows and how teachers and parents have been told about the idea, and it should probably be closed. An honest growth mindset, one that knows its limits, depends a lot on the environment, and has small effects instead of big ones, might not be as inspiring as a poster on the wall of a classroom.
