From elementary school to adulthood, most people form a set of habits and ways of learning that they never really question. They write things down, read them again, and maybe highlight a few lines because they think that doing something over and over will help it stick. Most of the time, it doesn’t, or at least not as well as it could. Worse yet, not many people were ever taught to look at how they learn—to see where their understanding actually breaks down or why an idea that seemed clear at the time disappears by the following week. Metacognition is the word for that gap. Courses that are based on it are slowly getting the attention they’ve had for years.
At its most basic level, metacognition is the act of thinking about how you think. It sounds like it goes in a circle, but the idea is based on decades of research in cognitive science. Simply put, Cambridge International Education uses clear language to explain it: metacognition is the way that students plan, track, evaluate, and change how they learn. That’s not a soft skill. One that can be used, but it gets lost between educational theory and the classroom a lot of the time. It’s not something that most teachers were trained to do. I think most of them have never heard of it.
Recent changes have been made to access. There are now more structured metacognition courses on all the major learning platforms, and the quality has gone up. Cognitive psychologists have studied chunking, mind mapping, active recall, and reflective learning in great detail. Rice University’s Coursera course is based on these strategies and others that have been shown to work in real life. The class meets once a week for about ten hours, which is a reasonable time commitment for someone who wants to improve how they think about and use information. If the average student actually works at that speed, that’s a whole different story. One of the biggest problems in online education is that not many people finish self-paced courses.
There are options that are more specifically made for teachers. A researcher named Jonathan Firth has put together a free one-hour CPD course that is hosted by Seneca Learning. Firth has spent a lot of time thinking about how metacognitive habits can be built into everyday classroom practice. Instead of focusing on how to study better on your own, that site helps teachers create classrooms where students learn to check their own understanding by pausing to ask not only “did I read this?” but also “did I actually follow it?” It’s not as important as it might seem that difference. Sometimes it’s very different to know that you’ve read something and know that you understand it.
It’s important to note that this kind of conversation is now also happening in the AI research community, even though it seems like a big jump. Large language models show behavior that looks like metacognitive behavior in conferences at places like the Simons Institute. These conferences look at how they reason about the limits of their own knowledge or change their responses based on uncertainty. I suppose that seeing machines get closer and closer to metacognitive awareness will, ironically, make more people think about what that awareness means to them. Even though the study is still new, it’s hard to miss the connection.
However, most people are more interested in a metacognition course because of something that happens right now. A student who keeps failing tests even though they study for hours. A worker who finishes a book but can only remember three things about it two weeks later. Someone who is frustrated by the fact that they learn a lot in workshops but never know how to use what they’ve learned at work. This is where metacognitive training really seems to make a difference. Instead of just reading faster or studying longer, learning to pinpoint the exact point where understanding breaks down is a completely different approach.
You can’t help but think that this should have been taught in schools decades ago. The math behind it isn’t new. The new thing is that they are willing to put it together in a way that people outside of academic research can understand. People can change their habits with either a free one-hour course or a structured four-week program. The first step is to pay attention to how you learn, not just what you’re trying to learn. What a small change in perspective can do for such a long time.
