Nicky killed Adam Macintosh in The Better Sister, but the full story is more complicated than a simple murder reveal.
During a violent confrontation, Adam attacked Nicky and began choking her. She stabbed him in the neck with a pocketknife to protect herself. Adam survived the initial wound, but Ethan later found him bleeding and chose not to call for help.
Nicky caused the fatal injury, while Ethan’s decision ensured that Adam would not survive.
Why Nicky Stabbed Adam
Nicky went to Adam’s house after Ethan told her that he had seen Adam physically attack Chloe. Worried about her sister and son, Nicky confronted Adam and demanded that Ethan be allowed to leave with her.
Adam refused. He used Nicky’s past addiction and custody problems to argue that she was not capable of caring for Ethan.

Bill was involved in the corruption surrounding Adam’s law firm, giving investigators a believable reason to suspect him. Chloe finds records and a recording connecting Bill to the Gentry Group’s crimes. She gives copies to Detective Bowen while pretending to offer the originals to Bill.
She also plants Nicky’s pocketknife in Bill’s office. Police find the weapon and arrest him, believing they have identified Adam’s killer. TV Guide’s finale recap also explains how Chloe creates a motive and places the murder weapon where investigators will find it.
Nicky protects herself by hiring a private investigator to uncover damaging information about Detective Guidry. The information is leaked to the press, weakening Guidry’s credibility just as she begins connecting Nicky to the murder.
Bill may have committed serious crimes, but he did not stab Adam.
The cover-up allows Nicky, Chloe, and Ethan to avoid punishment for their parts in Adam’s death. They protect one another, but they do so through lies and planted evidence.
Was Adam Abusive?
Yes. The finale confirms that Adam abused both sisters in different ways.
He damaged Nicky’s reputation, used her addiction against her, and helped take Ethan away from her. Later, he became physically abusive toward Chloe.
Ethan witnessed Adam attacking Chloe, which is why he contacted Nicky before the murder.
Adam also encouraged years of anger between the sisters. Chloe believed Nicky had abandoned her responsibilities, while Nicky believed Chloe had taken her son and replaced her.
The truth is that Adam benefited from keeping them divided.
Once Chloe and Nicky understand the full extent of his manipulation, their relationship begins to change. They stop seeing each other as the main source of their pain and recognize what Adam had done to both of them.
What Happens to Jake?
The finale introduces another mystery when Jake Rodriguez is found dead on the beach.
Jake knew dangerous information about Adam’s law firm and the people connected to its illegal activities. He had also spoken to the FBI and feared that corrupt agent Edward Olivero or someone connected to the Gentry Group might target him.
The series does not reveal who killed Jake. His death leaves one final question unanswered after the truth about Adam’s murder has been exposed.
What the Final Scene Means
The final beach scene shows Chloe and Nicky together, followed by images of their younger selves.
It represents the sisters reconnecting after years of resentment and manipulation. They cannot undo what happened, and their choices after Adam’s death are far from innocent. Still, they have finally stopped allowing Adam’s lies to keep them apart.
Neither woman is clearly the “better sister.” Both are flawed, both have been hurt, and both make morally difficult choices.
So, Who Really Killed Adam?
Nicky stabbed Adam while defending herself from his attack.
However, Ethan later found Adam alive and chose not to call for medical help. He then altered the crime scene because he believed he was protecting Chloe.
