Why Do People Say It Took 120 Years?
The 120-year answer comes from Genesis 6:3, where God says:
“My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
This statement appears shortly before God instructs Noah to build the ark. Some readers understand it as a 120-year countdown until the Flood. Based on that interpretation, Noah may have built the ark during all or part of that period.
A well-known Jewish tradition goes further and says Noah spent the full 120 years constructing the ark. The medieval commentator Rashi taught that the long building period gave people time to see what Noah was doing, ask questions and change their ways.
However, Genesis never directly connects the 120 years to the ark’s construction.
Could the 120 Years Refer to Human Lifespan?
Some readers interpret Genesis 6:3 as a limit on how long people would live. Under this view, God was saying that the human lifespan would eventually be reduced to 120 years.
The difficulty is that several people listed after the Flood lived much longer than 120 years. For example, Shem and other descendants of Noah lived for several centuries.

Why Would the Ark Have Taken a Long Time to Build?
According to Genesis 6, the ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high. The exact modern measurements depend on the length used for a cubit, but the vessel was clearly enormous.
The work included:
- Gathering and shaping large amounts of wood
- Building three levels
- Creating rooms or compartments
- Sealing the ark with pitch
- Preparing space and food for Noah’s family and the animals
The Bible does not describe Noah’s tools, building methods or workforce. It also does not say that Noah completed every part of the project without assistance.
Because so many details are missing, estimates based on the ark’s size remain speculative.
Did Noah Build the Ark in 40 Days?
No. The 40 days mentioned in the story refer to the period of rain, not the time required to build the ark.
Noah, his family and the animals were already inside the completed vessel before the rain began. Genesis says the rain continued for 40 days and 40 nights, while the entire Flood account covers a much longer period.
